The Geostationary Fourier Imaging Spectrometer (GeoFIS) as part of the Geostationary Tropospheric Pollution Explorer (GeoTroPE) mission: objectives and capabilities

چکیده
The Geostationary Fourier Imaging Spectrometer (GeoFIS) is proposed as part of the European Geostationary Tropospheric Pollution Explorer (GeoTroPE) mission. For this mission, two instruments are considered: one covering the thermal infrared region (GeoFIS) and one covering the ultraviolet–visible and near-infrared regions (GeoSCIA). The geostationary orbit (GEO) provides indeed a unique opportunity of monitoring tropospheric pollution and photochemistry on the regional and continental scales. In this paper, the scientific goals and requirements of GeoFIS are described. 2004 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Monitoring tropospheric pollution using infrared spectroscopy from geostationary orbit
This paper presents the Geostationary Fourier Imaging Spectrometer (GeoFIS), a new satellite instrument that has been proposed to monitor tropospheric key pollutants (O3, CO) in order to improve the predictive capability of tropospheric chemistry models. The horizontal resolution of GeoFIS is about 15× 15 km2 and the temporal resolution is about 60 minutes. It is shown that the current instrume...
متن کاملCalibration of the Geostationary Imaging Fourier Transform Spectrometer (GIFTS)
The NASA New Millennium Program’s Geostationary Imaging Fourier Transform Spectrometer (GIFTS) requires highly accurate radiometric and spectral calibration in order to carry out its mission to provide water vapor, wind, temperature, and trace gas profiling from geostationary orbit. A calibration concept has been developed for the GIFTS Phase A instrument design. The in-flight calibration is pe...
متن کاملTropospheric Emission Spectrometer ( TES ) Level 1 B Algorithm Theoretical Basis Document
The Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES) is an imaging infrared Fourier transformspectrometer scheduled to be launched into polar sun-synchronous orbit on the Earth ObservingSystem (EOS) CHEMISTRY 1 satellite in December 2002. We describe how the overall missionobjectives flow down to the specific science and measurement requirements and how, in turn, these are implemented in...
متن کاملA numerical testbed for remote sensing of aerosols, and itsdemonstration for evaluating retrieval synergy from a geostationary satellite constellation of GEO-CAPE and GOES-R
We present a numerical testbed for remote sensing of aerosols, together with a demonstration for evaluating retrieval synergy from a geostationary satellite constellation. The testbed combines inverse (optimal-estimation) software with a forward model containing linearized code for computing particle scattering (for both spherical and non-spherical particles), a kernel-based (land and ocean) su...
متن کاملGeoSTAR - A New Approach for a Geostationary Microwave Sounder
The Geostationary Synthetic Thinned Aperture Radiometer (GeoSTAR) is a microwave atmospheric sounder, with capabilities similar to those of the AMSU-A/B system, and is intended for deployment in geostationary orbit – where it will complement future infrared sounders t o enable all-weather temperature and humidity soundings. It also has the capability of mapping rain rates, and it can be deploye...
